The 8-foot alligator captured in Shreveport's Queensborough neighborhood on Thursday afternoon has been killed.

Under Louisiana law, any alligator under six feet in length must be re-released. Those over six feet may be killed and sold or re-released at the discretion of the trappers that usually receive the reptiles from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Trappers can bring in $12  to $15 per foot harvesting alligators. The female captured Thursday in Queensborough measured 8'4"and weighed in at 325.

The trapper that took her says he takes the meat for himself and sells the skins to highest bidder.

The alligator was captured in a culvert in the 2800 block of Jewella Avenue Thursday in a dramatic battle that drew a crowd of onlookers and created a lot of excitement in the process.

Officers with Cross Lake patrol and animal control responded to the animal complaint and found the gator in a drainage ditch.

It took several officers working together to round up the reptile. Shreveport Lake Patrol Cpl. Brian Michael wrestled the alligator while another officer went to get tape to hold the alligator's mouth shut.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries advises citizens not to kill, harass, molest or attempt to move alligators. State law prohibits such actions, and the potential for being bitten or injured by a provoked alligator is high.

Fortunately, no one was injured in Thursday's capture.
